The Hour of Charm was a novelty in 1935, the notion of an "all-girl orchestra" dismissed out of hand by many in the music business. It was believed that women lacked the discipline and concentration necessary to become top musicians. Maestro Phil Spitalny thought otherwise.

He had witnessed a concert in 1932 containing an electrifying performance by a brilliant female violinist. If an entire orchestra of equally talented women could be formed, Spitalny thought, it would be a "natural" for radio. _{John Dunning}
