The Hoagie Charmichael Show
Volume Number: 1
Episode Count: 7
Catalog #: V-HCMS-1
Hoagy Carmichael claimed to have no vocal talent. His friend Hollywood columnist Harry Evans used this argument to coax him onto the air: what Carmichael had was style; the same kind of rough-cut singing voice that Jack Teagarden had, and a flawless sense of delivery. He also had a reputation, being one of America's best-known composers, writer of many popular classics including Star Dust. Tonight at Hoagy's brought in jazz notables, re-creating the jam sessions that frequently took place at Carmichael's home. The specialty of Something New was two-fold: discovering new talent and rediscovering talent that had been neglected. Only his final se-ries, on CBS, ran under his name: a pleasant quarter-hour of songs. John Dunning
