Martin Kane was conceived as a TV show--one of the earliest detective series of that young medium--but it ran concurrently on radio. The hero was a quiet, calculating, introspective type who had an unusually good relationship with the police, smoked a pipe, and could usually be found at Happy McMann's Tobacco Shop. This was a natural tie-in for the sponsor, and commercials for U.S. Tobacco were sometimes integrated into the stories._{John Dunning}
