Fred Waring rose to fame with one of the largest musical aggregations in modern show business. He was born June 9, 1900, in Tyrone, Pa. His original band, formed in 1917, included Waring, his borther Tom, Freddy Buck, and drummer Poley McClintock. As students at Penn State, they played many local dates in the early '20s, evolving from the small but energetic "banjazztra" into a national music force. _{John Dunning}
